The two most important things a successful DJ requires, to put it in a nutshell, are constant practice and utter dedication. All pieces of sophisticated equipment, latest software, choice of songs are only next in importance. The right software, mixing boards and techniques are certainly needed for a good DJ, but it really takes a lot of practice and dedication to be recognized as a good DJ.
First of all, be clear about your priorities and goals. Are you going to remain only as an online DJ? Are you planning to DJ at bars or clubs? What sort of music you intend providing your hearers and what type of audience you want to cater to? What do you do best and what are your relative strengths and weaknesses? Make it a point to answer these questions faithfully and driven by a greed to earn more money.
It is absolutely essential that to succeed as a good DJ, you must have a passion for music and willing to enlarge your music vocabulary. You have to be willing to get that new CD, to search for those less-heard songs for your audience. You are not required to be a musical wizard, but you have to be fairly knowledgeable about music, current trends, important artists and all the finer details about music that matter. A fair knowledge of music not only allows you to recognize and discuss songs, but also helps you with mixing them. Most people strongly suggest buying an iPod or similar media player and keenly listen to music that you like as also all the music that you are unfamiliar with. By listening to music your unfamiliar with you get exposed to new artists and tracks and it helps you make important connections between different songs.
This type of constant listening also enables you to observe how other successful and better-known DJs do it. Choose two or three DJ's whom you admire or would like to emulate and go to their shows regularly. Listen to how they mix their music, how they perform, you will learn a lot first-hand from listening to others. Make it a point to spend at least an hour a day to music or radio stations, to gather new music and related information. Yet another important thing is to be everwatchful about people's reactions. Assuming you were out on a Saturday and heard the same album cuts and mixtape songs coming out of three or four different vehicles, you can rest assured that those tracks would work for you that night just as well as any other hit.
